Silence of the North

599,00 DKK

My new book expresses my fascination of the natural world and it brings together my favourite photographs from my many trips and expeditions to the nordic countries. Besides the many photos, I also share some of my thoughts, and I do my very best to describe the beauty and silence I find in nature.

Received this book with great anticipation, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! The photos are incredibly beautiful, and when you read the text it transports you and you feel like you are part of the experience. If you love nature, the outdoors, and photography, this is definitely the book for you. Thank you.

The book is very impressive and highly recommended. All pictures were taken in wintertime in Denmark and Greenland. They do not live from intense colours or shrill sensations, but from very intimate and peaceful moments in nature, reduced to the essential and without any dispensable or distracting detail.

Most pictures are long-lens shots of animals and show very intimate and atmospheric moments. The pictures tell a story and let us participate in a brief moment of the portrayed animal at its daily struggle for surviving the hard wintertime. Such pictures can only be made by a person who does not only love nature, but has a deep understanding of the portrayed animals, a lot of patience, and the skills to survive the extreme Greenland winter. My favourite wildlife picture is the one with the washy, light-grey silhouette of a musk ox standing like a monument in a misty, white-out landscape. This moment captured must have been very impressive!

The book includes, apart from only a few landscape pictures, also a number of simplistic close-ups and very intimate woodland cut-outs, often softened by mist or falling snow flakes causing a dreamlike atmosphere. These are my favourite pictures, presumably because as an amateur landscape photographer I am inspired, whereas such wildlife photography is by far out of my reach and capabilities.

This book is one of those rare books which I can page through again and again, without getting tired. Unfortunately, I always get the strong feeling that I should immediately lay the book aside, quit my job, and become a professional landscape photographer. Unfortunately, life is not that easy…

A beautiful collection of inspiring wildlife photography. I keep going back to it and looking at the photographs. I recommend this collection highly.

I don’t buy many books by other photographers, but this is well worth the exception. It is a beautifully done book, of course showing Mr. Hilmer’s stunning photographs. Both the photos and the presentation really capture the feeling of the Arctic. The very high quality production means that this book lives on my coffee table for everyone to see.

Absolutely stunning book. Pure inspiration. Over a nice wine, a beautiful read, and to study the images in detail. Simply stunning work.
